Jimmy Ruffin es hermano mayor del vocalista de The Temptations David Ruffin. Esa canción, What becomes of the broken hearted, producto de los años de Motown llegó al top 10 en Reino Unido, esto fue en 1966, el año de You can`t hurry love de The Supremes.

Sobre What becomes of the broken hearted: "Escuché la tonada siendo cantada por el escritor James Dean. La canción tiene la clase de palabras que uno realmente puede sentir y era una bella y melódica canción. Cuando le pregunté para quien era la canción, me dijo que la iba a grabar The Spinners. Pero le pedí que me la dejara cantar, y a él le gustó mi versión lo suficiente como para que me la dejara grabar."

En 1970 el formó equipo con su hermano David que ya estaba haciendo su carrera en solitario, y como The Ruffin Brothers hicieron un remake de la canción de Ben E. King Stand by me.

Regresó a las grabaciones en 1980 con la compañía de Robert Stigwood con Hold On to my Love, esto fue producido por Robin Gibb.
